Hi, I'm Matteo Waving Hand

I'm a Spacecraft Engineer

I work on satellites, love to code, and enjoy figuring out how things tick. Welcome to my website!

ABOUT ME

>

I’ve been fascinated by space for as long as I can remember. Nowadays I get to fly actual spacecrafts at the European Space Agency, which is pretty fun. Still waiting on my own personal spaceflight, though.

>

I grew up in a tiny village near Venice, Italy, where the night sky was dark enough to fill me with wonder and the countryside was boring enough to teach me how to code. I became a Space Engineer in Padua, and somehow ended up in Darmstadt, Germany, where I live now.

>

In my free time, I tinker with technology, code awesome projects for fun, and read pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I also play a lot of roguelike games and run TTRPGs for my friends.

WHAT I DO

Spacecraft Operations

<p>

I fly spacecrafts for the European Space Agency. It is as cool as it sounds, at least in my head.

I have hands on experience with the full mission lifecycle.

<p>

Software Development

<p>

I code both for work and for fun.
At work, I develop nice interfaces for spacecraft health data and automations for tedious tasks. In my free time, I build tools related to my hobbies, which I usually open source.

<p>

Data analysis

<p>

I love finding patterns in data, so I do it a lot.

It helps with making sure my spacecrafts don't break, and it's fun too.
Just, please, no more bad Excel sheets.

<p>

MY WORK IN SPACE

This interactive globe shows the real positions of various satellites orbiting Earth that I worked with.

You can play around with the globe: tap on a satellite to learn more about its mission and my contribution to it.

MY DEV STACK

I enjoy discovering tools and workflows through experimentation. I try to make every script I write or project I build part of a learning process, helping me understand how different pieces fit together and how to solve problems more creatively.

For me, the “best” tools are the ones that let me explore and play without getting in the way. I’m drawn to frameworks and libraries that let me do something new, rather than just chasing the newest trends or absolute performance.

project1

OpsHub

A custom Jupyter-based webserver which serves as a collaborative scripting and automation platform for spacecraft operators. Includes tools to automatically detect anomalies and fetch relevant data based on known signatures, prompting users with suggested recovery actions.

project1

Phosphorite

A set of RPG game tools that simulate a fully configurable fictional spaceship, emulating a command shell, telemetry streams, comms, user sessions, LLM NPCs, and more, aimed at sci-fi TTRPG masters and players. Fully open-source.

project1

Mission Operator toolbox

A website relying on a django backend that serves as a central hub for Spacecraft Controllers: helps with monitoring passes, aids with mission planning and anomaly recovery, performs data flow checks between ground systems and provides easy access to documentation on the fly.
